Wimbledon retained their unbeaten start to the season with an emphatic ten try win over newly promoted Old Alleynians.

Whilst many points were scored this was a victory built first and foremost on a huge defensive effort, twice holding the visitors up over the try line and frequently denying what seemed strong point scoring positions.

Scrum half Jonny Mason began the scoring with an excellent snipe and finish from twenty metres. The second try saw an excellently constructed move well finished by winger Luca Rizzo. The last score of the half saw right wing George Brosch skilfully grubber the ball down the wing and then pick up and pass to the always present Paul Hendry, thus ensuring a 21-0 half time lead. The second half saw Alleynians start strongly. Waves of attack were initially stopped but eventually they burrowed over from close range to secure their seven points.

Wimbledon immediately gained good field position and after a strong break from Fadera, great hands along the backline put Rizzo in at the corner for his second try. Two minutes later a dropped ball by the OA’s full back was swooped on by Jack Reville who offloaded for Hendry to run under the posts. A third try for Rizzo brought up forty points for the home team. The visitors continued to attack from everywhere but in a frantic last eight minutes they conceded twenty eight points with a try for Tim Ridler, a a try for Lawrence Mason, a first for Andy Fadera and a penalty try after a twenty metre drive from the now dominant Wimbledon pack.

Steve Hill, Wimbledon RFC Director of Rugby, commented; ‘This was certainly our best performance of the season so far and the score certainly did not reflect the high quality of our opponents. I thought our front row of Vince, Mason and Abdul were excellent in the tight and around the pitch. Jack Cooke lead the team very well and I thought our decision making at 9 and 10 was really strong. As a squad we worked incredibly hard in defence and our kick chase led to a number of scores. It was fantastic for the large crowd to see such high quality rugby. The challenge remains to continue to improve and ensure we finish all the chances we create.’
