Wimbledon faced an unbeaten, top of the table London Welsh last Saturday and were given a demonstration of extremely well controlled, managed and executed league rugby. The weather conditions helped neither side but the Welsh kicking game was certainly the superior one, often putting them in strong attacking positions and creating real challenges for the Wimbledon back three. The first twenty minutes were scoreless with the Wimbledon’s Abdul and Obano making some telling hits. However a combination of missed tackles, a scrum under pressure and unnecessary penalties allowed Welsh to score four tries ahead of half time. Wimbledon started brightly in the second half and were twice stopped just short of the Welsh line. Flanker Tom Williams then appeared to have gone over from the lineout but the referee ruled no try. Welsh continued to apply pressure and the resulting Wimbledon mistakes saw the home team score increase. A rare bright spot for Wimbledon saw a quick taken midfield penalty , followed by excellent handling, and winger Tom Bracegirdle finish an excellent try. The final Welsh score, after showing patience and skill in the final third, typified the strong home team performance.
Wimbledon Director of Rugby Steve Hill commented; ‘We saw today why London Welsh are unbeaten this season. Theirs was an impressive performance. I will learn much about the Wimbledon players as individuals and as a group over the next two weeks in how they respond to this performance. We are much better than we showed today and the challenge against Maidenhead next Saturday is to prove that, most importantly, to ourselves.’
