The Dons started the game strongly, spending a good amount of time in the opposition half and opening the scoring with a Connor Bissett penalty. Good field position and pressure at the breakdown then saw the visitors penalised, a driving maul created and the powerful Wimbledon hooker Oghenetejiri Ajuchi driving over the line to score giving the home team an 8-0 lead. Further good field position was spurned with untidy lineouts and a scrum penalty allowed the visitors to score a penalty. On only their second visit to the Wimbledon final third a strong driving maul gave Wells their first try and a 8-10 half time lead. The second half began with Wimbledon pinned back in their own half where eventually a defensive mix up allowed Wells through for their second try. This was added to after sixty minutes when a series of pick and go’s eventually saw the visitors score and secure a 8-24 lead. Wimbledon full back Olly Thomas ran strongly the whole game and it was no surprise that it was he who broke out from the Wimbledon 22m area to set up field position for centre Paul Hendry to score. Bissett added the tricky conversion. With the clock running down Bissett made an excellent break from his own half, only to see his pass dropped and the chance to level the scores go begging.
Steve Hill Wimbledon RFC Director of Rugby commented; ‘We made an excellent start to the game but failed to capitalise three times on excellent attacking positions. Tunbridge Wells worked very hard in the second half and took their scoring opportunities well. We need to be more accurate in our execution and show more cussedness in contact if we are to get back to winning ways.’
