Five tries and eighteen points from the boot of fly half Olly Latto ensured Wimbledon secured five league points away from home at Hammersmith and Fulham. The first half saw the host in ascendancy through accurate kicking and good discipline. Hammers first two tries came from rolling mauls whilst wing George Brosch finished two excellent Wimbledon back moves. A third home team try gave the hosts a 22-15 half time lead. A series of sharp words could be heard emanating from the Wimbledon half-time huddle and whilst impossible to know if they had an impact Wimbledon then scored twelve ppoints in the first three minites of the second half through wing Tom Bracegirdle and centre Joe Lilley.
A long range try put the home team briefly back in front. Wimbledon then managed to establish a strong foothold in the Hammers half which lead to three penalties, all converted by Latto and a 29-41 scoreline with fifteen minutes remaining. The last period of the game saw staunch defence from the visitors. Two yellow cards were given against Wimbledon which lead on the last play of the game to Hammers securing a second losing bonus point and a 36-41 full time score.
Wimbledon RFC Director of Rugby Steve Hill commented; ‘ I was really pleased with how we took our opportunities today, a couple of really well executed backs moves and some good patience in the red zone. Poor discipline in the tackle and at the breakdown allowed the opposition to stay in the game and they scored some really well taken tries. This was a really tough test but a great outcome ahead of what will be another big test in Jersey next Saturday.’
